A Guide to Hair Types Used When Creating Custom-Made Wigs

Posted on

If you plan to enlist the help of a custom wig maker to have a wig created just for you, then you will likely be presented with many wig options. Just a few of these options include the wig cap type, hair color, and hairstyle. However, you may also be asked to choose the wig hair type you prefer. There are many types of hair used to create custom wigs, and learning about how they differ can help you design a wig that is perfect for your needs.

Read on to learn about just a few of the hair type options you will have when designing your own custom wig.

Synthetic Hair

While wigs can be created with human hair, wigs made with synthetic hair are also popular. Not only are synthetic hair wigs typically more affordable than wigs made from human hair, but synthetic hair does have its unique advantages. First, synthetic wig hairs are typically more strong and durable than human hairs. This means that synthetic wig hairs are typically less prone to breakage than wigs made from human hair.

In addition, a synthetic wig typically retains its style well, even after washing. For this reason, synthetic wigs are relatively low maintenance and good options for people who do not want to have to style their wig hair daily. The main disadvantage of synthetic wigs is that they cannot be colored with box or salon dyes like real hair can and some can be resistant to heat styling.

Chinese/Asian Hair

One human hair type that can be used to create a custom-made wig is Chinese or Asian hair. This hair type tends to be extremely thick and straight. While typically naturally black or brown in color, Asian hair, like all human hair types, can be color-treated by your wig maker if you would like a wig that is light brown or blonde in color. This hair type is typically straight and resistant to frizz when dry. However, when wet, Asian hair can become slightly wavy. This hair type is a good option if you want a wig that is dark in color and has a relatively straight style.

European Hair

European hair is another option when creating your own wig. This hair type is typically relatively fine, straight, and thin, and many people find this hair type easy to style. In addition, unlike Chinese/Asian hair, European hair is available in natural light colors, such as blonde and light brown. For this reason, you can have a light-colored wig made of European hair without the need for color processing. However, since European hair is a bit rarer than other wig hair types, it can cost a bit more.

If you plan to have a wig custom-made for you, then you should learn about all of your wig hair type options, so you can decide which is best for your needs. Synthetic, Chinese/Asian, and European hair wigs each have their unique advantages and disadvantages. Work with a custom wig maker to get started.
